FORT MYERS, FL (May 17, 2018) – In recognition of National Safe Boating Week May 19-26, the Fort Myers Yacht Basin, San Carlos Bay Sail and Power Squadron and Fort Myers Power Squadron are partnering to offer free Vessel Safety Checks and distribute important information to area boaters about how to stay safe on the water. On Saturday, May 26, volunteers from the two squadrons will distribute literature and conduct free boat inspections at the Fort Myers Yacht Basin and the Punta Rassa boat ramp from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Complimentary water and refreshments will also be available at these events.
The yacht basin is striving to have all of its boaters comply with national safety standards set forth by the United States Coast Guard. “We’ve implemented several programs to educate boaters about safety both on the water and here at the Yacht Basin and have seen measurable results,” said Brian Dodson, Interim Dockmaster. “Bringing vessels up to necessary safety standards is very important to us.”
“New boaters are unaware of the issues they will face, and experienced boaters are often unwilling to acknowledge the gaps in their education,” said Commander Moro. “Anything we can do to educate boaters is worthwhile.”
