Community members are invited to download the free app onto their smart device and follow the narrated tour of ten cultural stops. Look for the Florida Stories app on your iPhone through the App Store, or get it on Google Play. Once the app is downloaded and launched, select the Fort Myers, Dunbar Community tour. The Fort Myers Dunbar Cultural Landmarks Tour is a collaboration between the Lee County Black History Society and the Fort Myers Community Redevelopment Agency. This program is sponsored by the Florida Humanities Council with funds from the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture.
The tour contains ten stops of cultural significance in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard redevelopment area, including:
- Williams Academy Black History Museum
- Grace Church, Fort Myers Trinity Campus
- St. John First Missionary Baptist Church
- Friendship Missionary Baptist Church
- McCollum Hall
- Mt. Olive African Methodist Episcopal Church
- Dunbar Community School
- Oakridge Section of Fort Myers Cemetery
- Woodlawn Section of Fort Myers Cemetery
- Roberto Clemente Park
The Dunbar Cultural Landmarks Tour App was launched at a community event on November 2, 2019. The event was part of the 400 Years of African-American History celebration recognizing and highlighting the resilience and cultural contributions of Africans and African Americans.
