Midtown Receives FPZA Award

The City of Fort Myers Midtown Vision was selected for the 2019 Florida Planning & Zoning (FPZA) Award for Outstanding Plan. The City was recognized at FPZA’s annual conference and award banquet held in Key West.

The Midtown Vision Plan: Downtown Fort Myers Integrated Redevelopment Strategy was the result of a multi-year effort to engage the community in crafting a vision for the city, its downtown and the new Midtown. The Midtown Vision was produced in partnership with the Fort Myers CRA, the University of South Florida Center for Community Design and Research, Cella Molnar, LaRue Planning consultants, and many others.

The 243-acre Midtown area was the intense focus of the city’s planning and visioning efforts, exploring in-depth how the new proposed Midtown will accommodate smart growth, more housing options, and enhanced economic opportunities for urban infill redevelopment.

The Midtown Vision Plan was the result an intensive collaboration between the city, its citizens, local consultants, the students and faculty of University of South Florida, and had the enthusiastic support of elected officials. The products produced – the Plan Amendment creating Midtown, the Land Development Code (Smart Code) amendments, and the adopted Midtown Vision – have generated and will continue to generate interest in sound planning and zoning in the City for years to come.
