City of Fort Myers hosts American Red Cross Lifeguard Training

FORT MYERS, FL (Mar. 25, 2019) – The City of Fort Myers Aquatics Program is hosting an American Red Cross lifeguard training course starting on Friday, April 19 at the Golfview Pool, located at 1865 Golfview Ave, Fort Myers. Training takes place April 19, April 20 and April 22, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. Pre-registration is required (must provide name, verification of age, email address and phone number) and can be completed at the Fort Myers Aquatic Center located at 1750 Matthew Drive, Fort Myers. Payment of the $175 course fee is due upon the participant’s successful completion of the skills test.

To enroll in the lifeguarding course, participants must be at least 15 years of age before the last scheduled class session. Participants must be able to demonstrate the following skills:

  • 300 yard swim of either freestyle or breaststroke;
  • A 10 pound object retrieval in 6 to 8 feet of water in one minute and forty seconds; and
  • A two-minute tread, using legs only

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to teach candidates the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare candidates to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries.
