Fort Myers Aquatics to host lifeguard course

The City of Fort Myers Aquatic Center will host a lifeguard course on February 9, 10, and 11, 2018 at the Fort Myers Aquatic Center on Matthew Drive in Fort Myers. The course takes place from 3 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 9, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both Feb. 10 and Feb. 11.

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to teach candidates the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare candidates to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries. American Red Cross training makes learning fun and easy. To enroll in the Lifeguarding course, you must be at least 15 years of age before the last scheduled class session.

 To participate in the Lifeguarding course, you must be able to demonstrate the following skills.

  • 300 yard continuous swim of either freestyle or breaststroke
  • A 10 pound object retrieval in 6 to 8 feet of water in a minute and forty seconds
  • A (2) minute tread, using legs only

The cost of the course is $175.00, pre-registration is required at the Fort Myers Aquatic Center located at 1750 Matthew Drive, Fort Myers, FL 33907.
