FORT MYERS, Fla. (Dec. 10, 2020) - The Hanson Street extension from Veronica S. Shoemaker Boulevard to Ortiz Avenue opened for traffic today. The project includes two landscaped roundabouts at the intersections with Veronica S. Shoemaker Boulevard and Ortiz Avenue.
The extension provides the city with a fourth and more centralized east-west corridor between McGregor Boulevard and Ortiz Avenue. Much of the City’s industrial businesses are located on or near Hanson Street. This new extension will streamline access to and from these businesses and will assist with keeping industrial traffic off neighborhood roads.
Construction of this approximate two-mile corridor follows the City’s “Complete Streets” initiative. The Hanson Street Extension bike lanes and sidewalks will provide city pedestrians and bicyclists with safe connections to the Ortiz Avenue and Six Mile Cypress Parkway multi-use paths and the multiple parks, trails and wildlife preserves that can be easily accessed.
