[ARCHIVED] City of Fort Myers continues phased reopening of parks

FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 28, 2020) – To encourage outdoor recreation opportunities for the health and wellbeing of its citizens, the City of Fort Myers is resuming limited operations in parks and recreation areas beginning Wednesday, April 29. Park users are advised to observe all Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines, with social distancing procedures in place where applicable. Park restrooms will also reopen in locations where facilities are available.  

City baseball fields will open on April 29 for groups of 10 or less who want to practice baseball or softball, with related dugouts and bleachers remaining closed due to the lack of space for social distancing. The suspension of league play is still in effect until further notice. Outdoor tennis and pickleball courts will also reopen on April 29. The sites will resume normal operating hours. 

At this time, indoor recreation centers (including the Skatium and Riverside Community Center), pools, all playgrounds, pavilions, multipurpose fields, volleyball courts and basketball courts remain closed. Bleachers are closed at all locations. 

The following facilities will open with adjustments: 

Centennial Park, 2000 W. First St. – walkways open; volleyball, playground and pavilion areas are closed. 

Golf View Park, 1803 Golf View Ave. – tennis courts are open; the pool, playground and pavilion areas are closed. 

Lions Park, 2550 Cleveland Ave. – tennis courts are open; soccer field and basketball courts are closed. 

Roberto Clemente Park, 3265 Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd. – tennis courts are open; the playground, pavilions and basketball courts are closed. 

Sam Fleishman Regional Sports Complex, 1750 Matthew Dr. – Racquet Club open for tennis and pickleball, with restricted access to lobby area. Only one person per group permitted at payment area. 

Shady Oaks Park, 3300 Marion St. – baseball fields are open; building, multipurpose field and playground areas are closed. 

STARS Complex, 2980 Edison Ave. – baseball fields are open; building, multipurpose field, playground, pavilion and pool is closed. 

Neighborhood parks are open, with the exclusion of playgrounds, pavilions, volleyball courts and basketball courts.  

It is critical that everyone follow CDC safety guidelines in order for these facilities and activities to remain available to the public. City leaders continue to monitor Florida Department of Health data and work closely with Lee County on the phased reopening of public amenities.
