FORT MYERS, FL (July 24, 2019) – Two local organizations are hosting back to school events in partnership with the City of Fort Myers, one on Friday evening at the STARS Complex and the other on Sunday at the Fort Myers Skatium. Area youth will have the opportunity to pick up back to school supplies, get haircuts and participate in a host of other activities.

The Hoops on Mission Back to School Drive takes place at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 26 at the STARS Complex, located at 2980 Edison Ave, Fort Myers. Fort Myers native and Hoops on Mission’s founder Dwayne Jackson is hosting the third annual back to school supplies drive in conjunction with youth night.

Hoops on Mission encourages the area’s youth to gather at the STARS Complex for hoops, haircuts, food/drinks, karaoke, arts and crafts, and motivational speakers. Founder Dwayne Jackson started playing basketball in fifth grade, growing up in a single-parent household with both of his parents in and out of prison. Seeing the need for culture change and positive direction, Jackson founded Hoops on Mission. For more information about the organization, visit www.hoopsonmission.org.

Families are invited to the Multicultural Centre of Southwest Florida’s 20th Annual Big Backpack Event on Sunday, July 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Fort Myers Skatium, located at 2250 Broadway, Fort Myers. The Multicultural Centre will hand out 2,000 new backpacks full of school supplies to children ages 5 to 12 who are accompanied by parents or guardians. The supplies are donated through the generosity of community and business sponsors. The event also includes free haircuts, face painting and youth entertainment.

Founded by Leonardo Garcia and Jim White more than a decade ago with the vision of helping promote diversity in Southwest Florida, the Multicultural Centre of Southwest Florida has served more than 30,000 Lee County school-age children.
