FORT MYERS, FL (May 30, 2019) – The Florida League of Cities recently recognized Councilwoman Teresa Watkins Brown with a 2019 Home Rule Hero Award. Ms. Watkins Brown earned this prestigious award for her tireless efforts to protect the Home Rule powers of Florida’s municipalities and advance the League’s legislative agenda during the 2019 legislative session.
Home Rule is the ability for a city to address local problems with local solutions with minimal state interference. Home Rule Hero Award recipients are local government officials, both elected and nonelected, who consistently responded to the League’s request to reach out to members of the legislature and help give local perspective to an issue.
“I love being a part of local government and advocating on behalf of the citizens of Fort Myers,” said Ms. Watkins Brown. “Fort Myers is a growing city with mixed cultures and unique attributes within our communities. I strive to protect our city from governance that may not allow me to execute on providing important services to our citizens.”
Founded in 1922, the Florida League of Cities is the united voice for Florida’s municipal governments. Its goals are to promote local self-government and serve the needs of Florida’s cities. The League is founded on the belief that local self-government is the keystone of American democracy.
