Building & Zoning Oversight Committee

The Fort Myers Building and Zoning Oversight Committee (BZOC), comprised of 7 active building industry representatives, was established in May 2000.  BZOC works with the City to implement the provisions of the Florida Building Code to ensure building permit fees are appropriately utilized, and to provide recommendations to City Council regarding budget revenues and expenditures related to building permit fees, and recommendations to the Building Official and Community Development Department Director regarding operations affecting the level of service provided to the building industry.

City Council approved the Building, Permitting, and Inspections (BPI) Enterprise Fund to begin October 1, 2000, according to Florida Statutes, Chapter 553.80(g).  BPI became a self-supporting enterprise fund, separate from the City’s general fund. The enterprise fund, supported solely by permit fees, maintains a reserve to be used exclusively to enforce the Florida Building Code through plan review, inspections, reinspections, permit processing, building code enforcement, and maintaining a level of service to the building industry.
