City-Wide Speed Limit Changes to 25 Miles Per Hour

Last Updated Feb 2012

25 MPHEffective Monday, December 5, 2011, City-wide speed limits on all local streets unless otherwise posted changes from 30 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour. Speed limit signs will be installed on all other roads where ordinance does not apply.

“25 miles per hour speed limits on all local roads unless otherwise posted” sign will be installed below all City limit signs at each City entry.

Speed limits improve safety by reducing the probability and severity of crashes. Speed limit signs notify drivers of the maximum speed that is considered safe for favorable weather and visibility.

For questions concerning speed limit changes, please contact the City of Fort Myers Engineering Department at (239) 321-7445.

Is this legal? I didn't think a local dept could make changes in the law without higher ok. I am wondering if this one way to overlook illegal and unable drivers and allow them to get away with driving under the speed limit and blocking the flow of traffic.

This is based on the false beleif that people were obeying thespeed limit in the first place. The crashes resulting from alcohol and high speed are generally already above the speed. If they were law abiding and used good judgment there would be fewer accidents. Changing the speed limit only imposes on those who are already following the laws.

I think its GREAT! Its about time to help protect children playing in residential areas. For downtown traffic it will help to make it safer for pedestrians and cycleists.

Who came up with this. I really believe that our local officials believe they have to come up with new laws to justify their existence. This makes no sense.
