Fort Myers, FL (October 27, 2008) – The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), together with the Clean Boating Partnership, recognized the City of Fort Myers Yacht Basin as a Clean Marina. As Yacht Basin Dockmaster Leif Lustig explains, “The City facility sets a good example of environmental stewardship while providing a public service.”
More than 2,000 marinas provide services to thousands of boaters using Florida’s waters every day. The effects of year-round boating activities contribute to constant and growing pressure on Florida’s sensitive aquatic and marine ecosystems and the staff of the Fort Myers Yacht Basin has made the commitment to help its customers use the best practices to minimize these ecological pressures.
Florida’s Clean Marinas go above and beyond required environmental regulations by adopting safeguards that keep solvents, sewage, fuel and oil out of the water, while protecting manatees and other marine creatures. The City of Fort Myers Yacht Basin takes in and recycles waste oil, gasoline, diesel fuel, contaminated bilge water, antifreeze and batteries, in addition to household recyclables. The marina also provides basin-wide, on-demand sewage retrieval at no additional cost to the customers.
