The City of Fort Myers will observe the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 1, 2008. All City government offices, including the Solid Waste and Utility Billing offices, will be closed that day.
From the National Weather Service: Tropical Storm Fay will produce 30-40 mph winds with up to 50 mph gusts until approximately 11:00am. A storm surge of 1-2 feet is expected early this afternoon. A moderate to high tornado threat remains today and between 3 to 5 total inches of rain are expected.
Residential and commercial trash and horticultural collection will resume on August 20, 2008.
From the Fort Myers Police Department: all traffic signals in the City are repaired and all roads are clear at this time.
The Lee County Emergency Operations Center as well as the Fort Myers Emergency Operations Center are closely monitoring the track of Tropical Storm Fay, which is likely to impact Southwest Florida as a possible Category 1 hurricane.
Due to Tropical Storm Fay, the public hearings scheduled to be heard on August 18, 2008, at the Fort Myers City Council meeting will be continued to August 25, 2008.
Due to the weather predicted with Tropical Storm Fay, City Manager William Mitchell has closed all Fort Myers City Government offices on Tuesday, August 19.
Mayor Jim Humphrey and the Fort Myers City Council will award $101,900 to 36 arts organizations and individuals at Monday’s City Council meeting.
The Fort Myers Police Department will join residents at several events tomorrow for the 25th Annual National Night Out. Community Policing Officers along with the department’s Crime Prevention Practitioner and neighborhood watch groups have been planning the night since April. NNO is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in the fight for safer streets.
The City of Fort Myers Housing and Real Estate Division has moved into its new offices in the County City Annex, 1825 Hendry Street. The new phone number for the Division is (239) 321-7970.
Ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Southwest Florida Enterprise Center (SWFEC) will be held at 9:00am on Friday, August 1, inside the new building at 3903 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, Suite #5. The $4.1 million project constructed a new 40,000 square foot business incubator on the land behind the original location of the SWFEC on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.
During the City of Fort Myers Downtown Utility & Streetscape Improvements Project roads are opening and closing frequently due to utility replacement work.

As part of its nationwide updating of flood maps, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has completed the first comprehensive review of flood zones throughout Lee County in 23 years.  These zones determine flood insurance rates and base flood elevations for construction.

On Friday, July 25, 2008 beginning at 7:00 a.m. crews are scheduled to take out the sidewalk in front of the Morgan House on the north side of First Street.
As you know, Police Chief Hilton Daniels officially will retire on July 30, 2008. The recruitment for his replacement will continue through the beginning of Chief Daniels' retirement.
Saturday, August 9th at 9:00am near the boat ramp in Centennial Park.
With great sadness the Fort Myers Police Department announces the death of Officer Andrew Widman (d.o.b. 5-11-78) who was shot killed in the line of duty this morning.

All Fort Myers City government phone numbers are changing. The City is switching to a Voice Over Internet Protocol system that will save the City money by transmitting phone conversations over the existing data infrastructure. With the switch, all employees will get new phone numbers that will begin with the prefix 321. This includes the Police and Fire Departments (although 911 will not change). The project is being completed in phases and many numbers have already changed. The project is expected to be complete by August 29, 2008.
