History of the municipal government: Incorporated 1886. The name memorialized by this famous Florida city is that of General Abraham Charles Myers, a distinguished officer in the United States Army. It was given to the fort by General David E. Twiggs, federal commander in the Seminole Wars, who later became the father-in-law of Myers. The city was developed in the later years of the 19th Century, chiefly through the initiative of Stafford C. Cleveland, a New York newspaperman.

The Town of East Fort Myers was annexed on December 29, 1925. The present charter was adopted on May 14, 1957.

Situated on the south bank of the Caloosahatchee River, Fort Myers is the county seat.

Unique/interesting aspects of the municipality: Fort Myers was the winter home of Thomas Edison. Henry Ford, his friend, lived next door to him. The Edison Home was donated to the city in 1947 and tours are currently offered.

The Edison Festival of Light is celebrated in Fort Myers each year, which features the Parade of Light.

Fort Myers is the spring training home of the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins Baseball Teams.
