(Fort Myers, Fla.)-- Thirteen people have announced their intentions to run for seats on Fort Myers City Council. At a July 10 meeting, City Council certified the candidates for the 2017 election, which includes the seats for Wards 1, 3, and 5, as well as the position of Mayor.
The certified candidates are:
Randall P. Henderson, Jr. (incumbent)
Curtis J. Sheard
Teresa Watkins Brown (incumbent)
Minnie Henry Jackson
Terolyn P. Watson (incumbent)
Joel Allen Moroney
In order to become a certified candidate, each must have met the voter registration requirements by July 7, 2017. All positions are non-partisan.
Fort Myers City Charter and Florida Statutes allow for a primary election in the event that there are more than two candidates who qualify for any elective office in the City. The primary election will be held on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 for the positions of Mayor and Council members in Ward 3 and Ward 5. If no candidate receives 50 percent of the vote plus one, the top two candidates will face a runoff on Tuesday, Nov. 7. However, if any candidate receives 50 percent of the vote plus one in the primary, that candidate will win the seat outright and no runoff will be held.
Because only two candidates qualified in Ward 1, the Ward 1 election will be held on Nov. 7.
